Laugh at Stress

Research has shown that developing a healthy sense of humor has tremendous power to relieve stress. Stress is the biggest cause of heart attacks, obesity, depression, and even violence. We are all born with a sense of humor since babies can laugh at the age of 4 months. Children have a sense of humor very early on when they begin to understand the world.

In the film 7 Years in Tibet the main character played by Brad Pitt takes a journey through Tibet. The reasons for the trip are not as memorable as the line delivered by the Dali Lama. Pitt’s character was in mental turmoil over a decision he had to make. The Dali Lama turns to him and asks “Is there anything you can do about the problem right now?” Pitt “No” Dali Lama “Then stop worrying about it”. The moral of the story is that most of our stress is caused by our doom and gloom riddled thinking about the future. The fact of the matter is that if you can’t fix it now, then stop worrying about it.

Humor allows you to look at the things that are causing you stress and turn it on it’s head in order to bring levity to an otherwise difficult situation. When you share the humorous outlook about the stressful situation with others the issue will begin to feel less stressful. in fact, it may begin to loose it’s hold on you. It does not mean that is gone, but your approach will shift allowing you an opportunity for creative thinking.

Creative thinking is needed in order to solve stressful situations. Humor is the key that will unlock creative thinking. Something magical happens in our brain when we laugh. Endorphins are released and we get a sense of euphoria even if momentary. The shift in feeling changes your thinking. When you change your thinking new ideas that were stuck behind old ones are released. This phenomena happens in the brain as many times as you want it to occur. You have full access to this capability in you right now.

Here are five ways for you to instantly improve your sense of humor and reduce stress:

  1. Feed your funny. You were born with humor and now it’s time to notice it inside you. You need to trust your instincts. Your point of view is unique and crafted over time by your life experience. Find ways to indulge yourself in rich comedic chocolate and oozing caramel morsels of sweet delight through books, comedy shows, articles, whatever makes you laugh. At least 15-20 minutes a day spend time smothering yourself with your own brand of funny things.
  2. Find the funny in life. Get out and do things that you enjoy that make you laugh and bring you joy. Every thought about going to an amusement park in the middle of the day? Ride a roller coaster’s front seat! The key is to get physical about funny. Find ways to get all your senses involved like going to comedy shows more often.
  3. Study the funny. Watch comedians do their stand-up routines. Notice what made you laugh and what didn’t. This will begin to give you insight to your brand of funny. Different comedians will present on the same topic and some will resonate and some won’t pay attention to the subtle differences that appealed to you. This information will inform you as to your sense of humor.
  4. Share the funny. There are tremendous benefits to working on being a funnier person both to you and others around you. Share what you are learning with other people who are equally funny seekers or are always laughing. The bond that is created by sharing the funny with others will create instant memories and moments of joy that are relived every time you think about it.

Put up funny commentary at your desk, have a joke of the day at a staff meeting, have lunch with funny work mates. Funny at work may even lead to a raise! People like and want to be around funny people.

You probably don’t even need steps to be funny. Just reading this article you got idea of your own. Use them to your advantage. Help heal the world with humor one joke at time. Go make strangers laugh!

How to Improve Sense of Humor for Our Relationship

Since I had been dating with probably the funniest man on the planet, there are many occasions that we could laugh at ourselves and deal with our troubles without getting mad.

For some guys under great pressure, it can be difficult to laugh sometimes. On this something-should-be-taken-seriously planet, we also have to keep in mind that not everything should be taken so seriously if we ever wish to enjoy the “good thing in life”.

If you and your partner would like to find the funny side of your life, here are some tips to help you improve your sense of humor:

1. Avoid Sweating the Small Stuff: Several years ago I read a fantastic tiny book named Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff in Love, which is about many excellent tips to make your relationships happy. One of the best advices in the whole book is just the title of this book: Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff. Overlooking the small things and not paying much attention to them will make it much easier to laugh instead of freaking out.

2. Find Funny Opportunities: Sometimes funny things happen around us but we miss them. In fact things which are funny and deserve laughing are always around us. Find such things and spotting them will bring you more reasons to laugh.

3. Watch Funny Movies with Your Partner: There are lots of marvelous funny romantic movies or comedy shows that you can watch together. We absolutely love the show The Life and Times of Tim – which makes us burst out laughing every time!

4. Learn to laugh at Yourself: Sometimes we can’t realize the funny level of what we had done or we may feel embarrassed about those things. Yes, we can! We are allowed laughing at ourselves – generally these embarrassments here and there aren’t really that remarkable.

5. Act in a Goofy Romantic Way: Make a Ways-to-Say-I-Love-You List and get all sorts of crazy ways to express your love. A bar of chocolate, a bowl of breakfast cereal or a lovely handbag – they may be all goofy ways to insert a little pleasure to the relationship. However, don’t be afraid to act as silly as a kid sometimes – you’ll be surprised what a difference you have made in your in your relationship.

Using Sense of Humor to Attract Women

When on a date women love to laugh and enjoy a man with a good sense of humor. By all means if you know some good jokes, share them with your date. It will make a real good impression on them and they will think of you as a guy that’s a lot of fun to be around.

I must warn you though, if you don’t know the woman very well I would stay away from offensive jokes. She might be offended and could even cause her not to want another date with you. So, in my opinion you are better off telling clean jokes and not too suggestive.

What if you don’t know any good jokes? That’s no problem. Go to your local book store or fun shop and they will have some good joke books. Another idea is to find jokes on the internet. Just simply do a search with your favorite search engine. You will find tons of good jokes that way. Then, you can practice these jokes on your friends before you try them out on your dates.

P.S. Please whatever you do, don’t tell bad jokes. You need to make her laugh and if you tell crummy jokes you may bore her to death. Also, some Men’s publications have a section featuring some good jokes. And if you go to comedy clubs try and remember some good jokes that the comedians tell. If the audience is dying laughing, then it’s a good bet that when you tell the same joke to your date, she will think you’re funny and admire your sense of humor.

Using Sense of Humor to Make You Stronger

One of the most important traits that someone needs in order to maximize their emotional balance and strengthen their inner worth is a sense of humor. Not only does a sense of humor help someone put things into perspective, but the act of being able to, and actually, laughing at oneself almost invariably is a strengthening one. Harriet Ward Beecher wrote, “A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs. It’s jolted by every pebble in the road.” Bob Newhart approached this subject by stating, “Laughter gives us distance. It allows us to step back from an e, deal with it and then move on.” Numerous studies indicate that those having a sense of humor exhibit much more positive attitudes, experience far less extremes of ups and downs, suffer far less from depression, and are overall far better balanced emotionally. These studies also indicate that humor helps one handle adversity better, and encourages persistence and permits one to persevere. It is generally acknowledged that individuals who persevere have a far better opportunity to succeed because they don’t give up.

1. When one has a sense of humor, it gives him in a positive, fun loving, enjoying life, perspective. While those who take things seriously all the time are often overly intense, those with a sense of humor can often snap out of the doldrums of everyday life, and laughing often helps one see some positive in even the dreariest of circumstances. A paramount essential for successful people is their self- value, and without that sense of self worth, it is nearly impossible to be a success. It is a fact that most people are attracted to individuals who are uplifting (and entertaining), and someone who is able to laugh at himself, at circumstances, and at life, in general, is almost unilaterally more attractive for that and other reasons.

2. Inner strength is essential both to emotional balance, as well as to enjoying life. We have all heard on countless occasions how much less effort is needed to smile than to frown, but that only applies if the smile is a genuine one. Think of people you know personally, or do business with, or hold leadership positions, and simply remember how those who exhibit a genuine sense of humor are generally more appealing. When we laugh, we see far fewer problems, but see challenges and humor where others see problems. Laughter puts us in a better mood, and generally makes us feel better.

Why are comedians so popular? Why do so many people enjoy comedy shows, comedians, situation comedies on television, etc.? Simply stated, because it makes them laugh. The laughter helps them enjoy themselves and to relax. Life’s realities often has its stresses, and laughter and a sense of humor helps us handle those interruptions in a far better manner.

Use Your Sense Of Humor Appropriately

Everybody loves to be in the company of a funny person. Individuals that still have a sense of humor in any situation always are welcome by other people. Nobody likes to be around people that are always complaining about everything. People logically group around optimistic motivators. It doesn’t mater how you are, but if you have a good sense of humor; people sooner or later will come to you and will like to be part of your company.

Let’s see how a good sense of humor will help you:

First of all a good joke is a great way to introduce yourself to other people. Make a joke in the beginning of a conversation in many situations to break a cold wall between people. In my opinion, it is much better than to just say, “It’s a nice day today, isn’t it?”
Of course, in a lot of self improvement books you can read that starting conversations by talking about the weather is considered a good start. A good joke will not only introduce yourself in a nice way but also it will give to people positive impressions about yourself.

Sense of humor can help you get away from confusing situations. If you have a lot of work that need to be complete in short time, the sense of humor will help you get through without much stress. If you’re involve in a group project, the sense of humor will help to keep your team in a good mood and inspire you team mates to do a better job.

Be grateful, for the absurd is often what makes a hard position easier. If you can show a sense of humor in any situation, and if it necessary about yourself, the people that are working with you will follow you. As a result, the job is done in a more constructive and joyful way, which will make your boss happy and teach him that you are performing a better job that way.

One thing that you have to remember is that a sense of humor does not always works for any situation. There is a good time to make a joke and there is a bad time for a joke. For example: the funeral is definitely the bad place to make jokes. There are a lot of other situations when any joke is unethical. Don’t make people laugh at the time that they not suppose to. The proper time is the key.

Another thing that you have to consider is what you say. Some jokes can be very hurtful. As some people are laughing at your joke, there might be someone who won’t like it and won’t appreciate it at all.

You must be sensitive and say your jokes according to the nature of the people you are talking to. The bad joke can be very painful to some people and build the barrier between you and them. It can break some good relationships and the standard phrase like “hey, I was just kidding” might not fix the situation.

So how can you be sure that your joke is an appropriate joke, and won’t hurt anybody? If it is a very sensitive situation; try to sense the atmosphere around people that your joke created. If you feel that your joke succeeds, than continue, if not than stop immediately. But if you need to make a joke, aim it to yourself first, so nobody gets hurt. Also, you can make jokes about general situations, so you won’t hurt anybody.

A good sense of humor needs a big amount of forethought and timing on your side. One more, there is a time for everything. If you feel that your sense of humor is something that people around you will benefit from, then go for it. We all deserve a good laugh, after all.

Developing Your Child’s Sense of Humor

A sense of humor is such an important part of being a human. If we don’t laugh we can hardly live. Someone once said that man is the social animal. I think that man is the animal that laughs. Laughter is what redeems the darkest days and helps make the bright ones just a little bit brighter. It is the icing on the cake of life. We know that people who tend to laugh are healthier and mentally happier. They can look at the problems of life and get through them because they don’t seem as daunting. This doesn’t mean that laughter is the cure for everything, but it sure can help when things are not going so well. These tried and trusted truths help to show why it is important for all of us, and particularly children, to have a good sense of humor. Children are our future, and while this seems a cliche, it is true. We need children and they need us. The world needs them. But not all children have a great sense of humor. We love most children partly because they are silly and seem to be full of life. You want to develop that sense of humor in your child, both for their well being and yours. How can you develop the sense of humor in your child? It surely isn’t much like training a dog to sit. While this is true, here are a few hints that could help you get your child to laugh more.

1. While we all want our children to laugh and to laugh a lot, consider that not all people laugh as much as others. Some people simply are not hard wired to giggle or guffaw in the way that others do. They might be a bit more sad or introverted. This is just fine. Remember that it takes all kinds to make a world. Don’t try to force a naturally quiet child to laugh all the time. It will probably only make them resent you. However, even a quiet and introverted child wants to laugh and needs to laugh. The key is to achieve a balance. Find the things that make your child laugh and surround your child with these things. If it is a TV show, purchase the DVD. If it is physical humor, show them movies with physical humor. There are all sorts of possibilities.

2. Make sure that your child is not scared or feeling unsafe. A child that feels threatened will not laugh. If you can give your child a safe and comfortable environment they will be far more likely to develop their sense of humor. Although we cannot ensure that our children will not have bad experiences, we do know that we can do a lot to help them stay safe in their early years.

3. Finally, make sure that your child has friends with a similar sense of humor. If you think back to your childhood, you probably laughed the most when you were with a group of silly friends. Watching movies together or singing songs was one of my favorite activities. A child’s sense of humor will develop with the sense of humor of their friends. If your child is not laughing much, consider introducing them to a few more kids.

Remember that a child is a person and deserves to be treated like one. If they don’t want to laugh then they don’t want to. You cannot force them, but if you truly desire their happiness you can help them laugh a bit more.

Leaders Need Sense Of Humor

There are many aspects of leadership that a potential leader can generally be trained to be proficient in. Two aspects or qualities that are far less trainable are personal integrity, and possessing a sense of humor. Much attention has been paid to the first of these qualities, integrity (or lack thereof) by myself and others, but far less emphasis (or attention) has been cast upon the importance of a leader having a sense of humor. There are a number of reasons that it is extremely helpful for a leader to have a sense of humor:1. Humor often relieves stress or tension, especially the inherent stress that accompanies leadership. During the course of leadership, there are many tense circumstances that various individuals handle in a number of ways. Stress has been known to cause physical problems for some, and emotional trauma for others. Humor can relax a leader so that he can step away from the challenge, and perhaps look at the circumstance in a different perspective.2. Effective leaders must be able to laugh at themselves, so as not to take themselves too seriously. Many leaders, for example, are constantly striving for some sort of expert guidance, which often is simply a way for them to delude themselves sufficiently to procrastinate. Niel Bohr wrote, “An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made in a very narrow field.” Leaders using humor such as this (or you might call it sarcasm, etc.) can often “straighten their perspective” so that they can better focus on solutions.3. Humor is a great ice breaker. That is why the greatest and most inspiring public speakers almost invariably interject humor (especially humorous anecdotes) into their presentation. Using humor in this manner relaxes the audience, and generally puts them more in the mood to listen. When I give my presentations, I often begin by saying, “Others will tell you when they begin to sit back, relax and enjoy the presentation. I disagree, and I say, “Don’t sit back, or relax, if you want to get anything from the presentation. Get involved. And don’t look down to avoid eye contact, because if you do, you’re the one I’ll pick on.” Most attendees to my presentations have told me that my sessions are the most interactive they have attended, so I guess my “warm up” gets through a little.4. Humor can also be quite effective in one to one, or small group presentations, however, it is important to know your audience and their sensitivities. Some humor is great for some circumstances, but wholly inappropriate under other circumstances. For example, Groucho Marx is credited with saying, “Only one man in a thousand is a leader of men. The other 999 follow women.”These are just a few of the benefits and considerations of why humor is vital for leadership. A leader does not have to be the funniest guy around, but can’t be perceived as being “too serious.” Those leaders with senses of humor have been amongst the most effective ones that I have met.

Digging For Laughs: Sources Of Humor For Public Speakers

How was your last speech received by your audience? If you talked with them an hour, a day, or even a week after you gave the speech no matter how good their listening skills were, do you think that they would remember what you had said? If the answer is no, then you’ve got some work to do. I have some good news for you, don’t worry about learning new presentation tips – fixing this problem might be as simple as adding some humor to your speech. You Are The Funniest SubjectOften when we want to add humor to our speeches, we’ll go on a hunt looking for topics that we believe that our audience will find funny. The truth is that one of the funniest topics is already staring back at us when we look in the mirror: ourselves. We have all had a unique set of life experiences that have gotten us to where we are. We also go through a set of routines each and every day that our audience probably also goes through. We can draw from both of these groups of experiences and by adding just a bit of exaggeration we can transform events from our past into humorous moments for our audience.Boys vs. Girls Always Gets A LaughNo matter how hard we try to be sensitive to the other gender, it seems like we are always making mistakes. These mistakes more often than not result in miscommunications or misunderstandings between men and women.Considering the fact that your audience will probably be made up of both genders, using the types of miscommunications that can occur between genders is a great source of humorous material. Everyone will have had a similar experience and so getting your audience to laugh will be very easy.Read The Newspaper, Get A LaughThe key to creating humorous material that will really get a laugh out of your audience is to make it as topical as possible – use current events whenever possible. Your local newspaper or TV channels are a great source of this type of material. The trick to making this type of humor source work for you is to be careful to make sure that everyone in the audience will be aware of the story that you will be referencing. Stay away from the industry specific stories if you have a general audience. Try to stick with the stories that have made the front page of your newspaper. What All Of This Means For YouWe all know about the importance of public speaking and so we want each of our speeches to be remembered by our audience. One of the most effective tools that a public speaker has is humor. The more humor that you can pack into your next speech, the better the chances are that your audience will be able to remember what you said. All of this means that you’re going to have to find good sources of humor that you can use.I’ve got good news for you: great humor for your next speech is all around you. It turns out that poking fun at yourself is a great way to get your audience to laugh. The differences between men and women is another fantastic source of humor material. Finally, just by opening a newspaper you can find a lot of comedy in current events. It takes time, energy, and effort to work humor into a speech. It’s worth the effort because of the benefits of public speaking. The results of working humor into your next speech make this well worth the effort.
